“This is a rather uncommon book dealing with the philosophy in India. Instead of beginning with the philosophical thoughts to be found in Vedas and the Upaniṣads in general, I have tried to trace different views concerning the First Cause and then
proceeding to the ‘pre-history’ of philosophy in India. This is an unusual approach, not approved in academia, and almost wholly based on fragments rather than systematic base texts and their commentaries. Definite conclusions are difficult to arrive at, just because of the paucity of material. Nevertheless, I have tried my best to do justice to whateverI could collect from various Pali, Prakrit and Sanskrit works, not all of them philosophical.
